What Was Happening?

Conditioning high-grade seed rhizomes in breathable mesh bags under shade net canopy, followed by single-bud excision, coco-peat tray planting, and emergence monitoring of uniform turmeric shoots.

Why Was This Important?

Traditional rhizome planting consumes up to 1.2 tonnes of seed rhizome per acre with heavy 20-30% mortality from soil-borne fungi. The pro-tray seedling method saves 85% seed material, ensures 98% field survival, and shortens the field cycle by over a month.

Full Field Chronicle

Modernizing spice cultivation begins right at the seed stage. In this field chronicle from our nursery operations, we document the groundbreaking Single-Bud Pro-Tray Seedling Technology for high-curcumin Turmeric (Haldi). Seed rhizomes are first sorted, treated with biological fungicides (Trichoderma viride & Pseudomonas), and placed in breathable mesh bags under a 50-75% agro-shade net structure. The controlled microclimate provides optimal warmth and relative humidity (85-90%) to gently break rhizome dormancy and trigger uniform bud swelling. Once eyes are activated, single buds (5-10g pieces) are precisely excised and planted into 98-cell cavity plug trays filled with sterilized, bio-enriched coco-peat. Within 8-12 days, vigorous conical pale-green shoots pierce through the medium with an impressive 98% germination rate. This advanced technique slashes seed requirement from 1,200 kg/acre to under 180 kg/acre, prevents soft rot disease, and produces sturdy, disease-free seedlings ready for raised-bed drip transplanting.
Agronomy & Field Team Notes:

Bud emergence observed at day 9. 98.4% germination uniformity achieved across all pro-trays. Zero fungal infection or damping off detected under shade net microclimate.
